Nomads: A Reimagined Meyhane and Tavern Experience

In 2002, the traditional meyhane and tavern concept was reinterpreted in Amsterdam. World-renowned Dutch architect Rob Wagemans brought his modern vision to the Mediterranean, Turkish, and Eastern meyhane and tavern culture, opening Nomads in Amsterdam that year. From its opening day, Nomads inspired many European women to abandon salsa and begin taking belly dancing lessons. It also led to numerous Turkish and Eastern ornamental items finding their way into homes across Europe. Nomads' DJs and artists gained international attention with their albums, which fused Turkish and Eastern musical rhythms with Western music, achieving significant sales success in the global music market. In 2010, Dutch architect Rob Wagemans and the Nomads team opened a new Nomads in Istanbul. Many decorative elements and materials reflecting Turkish, Mediterranean, and Eastern architecture were reinterpreted by Rob Wagemans with a modern architectural approach, blending seamlessly with Istanbul's historical fabric and architecture. In a very short time, Nomads became an indispensable address in Istanbul, much like the city itself. It brought together many values, flavors, and cultures unique to Istanbul and Turkey—from music, cuisine, beverages, and entertainment to art and architecture—with the West.
